NEWS | Forgotten Secret Tunnels of Sandbach Spark Mass Interest In The Town

Having lived in the beautiful Saxon market town for more than 15 years, I consider myself a proud Sandbachian and was intrigued to learn of the network of tunnels running beneath the town and the campaign to uncover them.
For centuries, the town of Sandbach has hidden an almost forgotten collection of secret tunnels. Most will have heard the fascinating stories about a secret tunnel linking the Old Hall to St Mary’s church, others may recall tales of curiously bricked up passageways in the cellars and basements of nearby buildings but just what hidden secrets are lying right beneath our feet?
The community of Sandbach have decided to find out after Linden Burt, the founder of the project and lifelong resident of Sandbach, created the Facebook group: The Sandbach Tunnel Network.
The group quickly shot to over 700 members in just 3 days with hundreds more joining daily, sparking mass interest and a cascade of offers to help with the project.
Generous offers of assistance from professional services, along with the overwhelming support from the local community, has resulted in the project rapidly gaining momentum and enthralling the town with interest.
Nick Radford, one of the 6 people leading the project, explains the ultimate goal is to rediscover, record and learn about an important part of the town’s heritage.
It is our hope that the project will preserve and pass onto future generations the knowledge of the tunnels and the fascinating history surrounding them.

This is very much a community project and The Sandbach Tunnel Network would like to encourage any individuals that wish to get involved to contact them via the Facebook page.
There’s a long road ahead, but the people of Sandbach seem on course to find the light at the end of the tunnel!
