Camping Blog Camping with Style | Travel, Outdoors & Glamping Blog

Campers and glampers know that wellies are essentials at any time of year, something that’s practical for long wet grass and trips to the toilet block. We want light, comfy and practical so how do Leon Ultralight wellies stack up? Read on to find out…

As a toddler I had a pair of red wellies. I loved those wellies so damn much that I refused to take them off and would often have my afternoon nap whilst still wearing them. As a result, Shelly became Welly, and well, the name has stuck since. Suffice it to say, I’m a fan of wellies.

With a big road trip planned for later in the year and crazy changeable weather and camping and glamping trips most weekends throughout spring, wellies were top of our list of things that we needed, and Leon Boots Co got in touch with us at just the right time.

Styling

Of course, bog standard wellies aren’t going to cut it when your nickname is welly and you have a penchant for all things bold and bright, and my new wellies, from LBC are a joyous purple-pink colour, complete with warm and cosy lining.

For men, sadly as usual, the colour options are far more staid but whilst the olive green is pretty uninspiring, at least that makes them versatile in terms of looks.

Practicality

I’ve already got some super stylish UGG wellies that I’m pretty obsessed with, but they are not the easiest thing to get on and off.

In contrast, these wellies are cleverly designed to make them as simple as possible to get on and they feature big cut-out sections at the top of the boots which act like handles, making them super quick and easy to get on.

Taking the boots off is just as easy, with a clever little built-in lip that allows you to stomp on the back with your other foot to pull the boots off, or you can wedge the lip against a step or decking and pull your foot up and out of the wellies, no hands needed.

We found this particularly useful on a recent glamping trip. The yurt specified no outdoor shoes inside, and carrying stuff from the car into the yurt was made much easier by being able to take my wellies off and slip them back on again without needing to use my hands.

One thing that surprised us both, is just how light these wellies are. Of course, they are going to be lighter as they aren’t full-length boots, but even so, when they were delivered we couldn’t quite believe there were two pairs of boots inside. As the name suggests, these boots are indeed super light!

Tread of course is also important on wellies, no one wants to fall flat on their arse after slipping in mud or on wet grass, and whilst the tread isn’t super deep, we’ve both found it sufficient for our needs.

Sizing

The welly sock liners are easily removed and can be washed to avoid the scourge of niffy boots and if you’re wearing them in the summer, you can remove the lining altogether – this also makes them really quick and easy to slip off and put on hands-free.

The one thing I would say, and this is something I didn’t take heed of (it clearly advises this on the website), that due to the thick, cosy welly liners, going up a size is recommended.

I’m a UK size 6 with a normal to slightly narrow foot, and they fit me with the liner in and a thin sock on, but they are snug, so don’t be like Shell. Size up if you order some for yourself!

Shop The Look

The men’s ankle boot wellies cost £44.99 whilst the women’s wellies cost £39.99.
