Assembling The Bike

Within hours of this bike being delivered, I enlisted the help of my husband, and together we had it fully assembled using the supplied multitool in under an hour. Due to the terrible ‘summer’ weather and not having a garage, we ended up putting the bike together in the living room and I was extremely impressed with the level of packaging, with everything fitting in one box with really good padding protection.

If you’re struggling with the written instructions, there are videos on the Himiway website you can refer to for additional help.

Due to the weight of the bike, having two of us working on it definitely made it easier. This is definitely not a light bike, weighing in at a chunky 32.6kg. Due to the sheer size of the bike too, it’s not the easiest thing to maneuver around, so do consider this if like me you need to store your bike in a place that has stepped or otherwise tricky access.

That said, although fairly cumbersome to move around, once you’re on the bike, it’s a totally different story and that bulk makes for an extremely smooth and comfortable ride, but more about that later.

First Ride

The low-step design (step-thru) makes it super easy to get on and to dismount from this bike and once I was on it, I had a huge grin on my face. I love bikes that are fun to ride, and the Himiway Cruiser Step-Thru definitely is!

I don’t think you’ll need to be familiar with electric bikes to get on with this, it’s easy and intuitive to get to grips with and the bright readout displays all the information you need as well as incorporating the main controls of the bike which allow you to turn the pedal assist on and determine the level.

The main thing I needed to get the hang of was the torque on this bike. Initially, I felt like it shot off leaving me a bit wobbly, but I soon got the hang of it and began to enjoy the surge of power in pedal assist mode.

Some Favourite Features

Can we take a moment to talk about these tyres though? I mean just look at these 4″ beasts! This chunk translates to enhanced comfort and together with the suspension, delivers a fantastic ride. You still feel connected to the road though and it doesn’t remove the feeling of control.

I love the feeling of power you get from this bike as it surges off, especially on one of the higher pedal assist settings and the speed is phenomenal!

We went on holiday and were away for much of September, I charged the bike fully before leaving as I wanted to see whether the battery would discharge whilst we were away.

When I returned at the end of the month, the battery was still as full as when I left, so that’s a real bonus if you won’t be riding your bike every day and might go days or even weeks between using it.

Despite this being a cruiser bike, the position of the handlebars and the hand grips themselves, I found to be extremely comfortable. The handlebars felt more like those on a mountain bike in terms of position and they don’t result in that slightly awkward-looking riding position that a traditional cruiser gives.

Other Considerations

This bike is heavy which means whilst you might normally be happy to have it on the lowest possible pedal assist level, you might need to bump it up a little more than you usually would.

This of course reduces the battery life, but honestly, I usually keep my rides to under 20k and will typically ride just 8-10k when I go for a local leisure ride. If I were using this for commuting, I’d probably need to recharge it every 3 days or so, but with the removable battery pack, that’s no hardship.

I wouldn’t consider this bike as versatile as others I’ve tried, whilst easy cycle trails in the forest could easily be tackled on this bike, as the ‘Cruiser’ name suggests, I wouldn’t consider this an off-road bike, but of course I wanted to give it a try on some woodland trails with steep sections anyway.

It’s stable to a point off-road (I did manage quite a substantial fall on a steep downhill woodland trail though), but it’s not light or maneuverable enough to make even beginner mountain biking trails an option. You’re much better sticking to the road, town cycle paths, tow paths, beach promenades and gentle cycle trails.

To sum up the Himiway Cruiser Step-Thru Electric Bike, I’d describe the bike in 3 words; Chunky, funky and fun (a bit like me!).

For me, the only reason this loses 1 star is because the cycling opportunities where I live that don’t involve roads are limited and much as I’d love to be confident on a road without cycle lanes, I don’t think I ever will be. So whilst I do regular sections of road cycling out of necessity, that’s not what I enjoy most, but due to the size of the bike transporting my bike by car, for example, to use on camping trips, won’t be an option until I can invest in a cycle carrier.

Himiway Cruiser eBike Review

I’ve fitted all previous eBikes inside my car, either folded or with the rear tyre removed but the Himiway Cruiser Step-Thru is just too big and heavy, meaning that in order to take the bike further afield, I had to invest in a cycle carrier for my car.

and those chunky tyres and the suspension absorb all bumps, making for a fantastic ride.

The speed of this bike is astonishing and the comfort is superb. One of my pet peeves is that bike seats are never comfortable for occasional riders, but this seat is among the best I’ve encountered. And those chunky tyres and the suspension absorb all bumps, making for a fantastic ride.

As a commuting bike used mainly on the road or cycle paths, though, this is superb and whilst buying an eBike is always going to be quite a big investment, the Himiway Cruiser Step-Thru is a powerful and well-built bike that is comfortable, capable and fun to ride so should definitely be considered.
