Practicality & Performance
Charging from the mains before a camping trip is one thing, and honestly, with just the two of us we’d never deplete this much power over a few days during an average camping trip.
That said, having the ability to top up and recharge on the go is a real bonus. You have the option of charging the PowerRoam via your car 12V socket, or even better, you can add on a solar panel and charge it that way.
We opted for the Powoxi 120W Portable Solar Panel Kit which cost around £170 on Amazon. Using this, and charging the unit from 0% power, on an average sunny day in the UK, it took 6 hours to bring the PowerRoam up to 50%.
Pretty good going we thought, which means given our average daily use of 10-15% power, it would only require an hour or two hooked up to the solar panel to keep it fully topped up.
It’s worth noting too that when plugged into a solar panel, the readout on the PowerRoam tells you how many Watts are charging, so you can check if you are getting full sun and reposition the solar panel if necessary to get the optimum charging performance.
To give the PowerRoam a real test though, we took it over to our friend’s house to plug in their camping fridge. On an almost full battery of 98%, the power station ran the camp fridge for a full 7 hours. That’s pretty impressive for such a high-draw appliance.
Final verdict
This is a sturdy and capable bit of kit and performs well when compared with similar devices that we’ve tested. It’s great value and provides reliable performance, and when paired with a solar panel, means you can happily camp off-grid for as long as you like.
Choose from the PowerRoam 600w, also available is the UGreen PowerRoam 1200w.
