Introduction

With a 3-season rating and snuggly filling, this sleeping bag is ideal for Spring to late Autumn camping. What’s unusual about this sleeping bag though is that it can be used either side up, with one side being thicker and warmer and a cooler side ideal for warmer weather camping. Clever huh?

I’m a perpetually cold camper (apart from when I’m having hot flushes, but I won’t get into that), so being warm at night is always a bit of an obsession for me, even in the height of ‘summer’.

I spent 4 nights camping over the bank holiday and a couple of the nights were pretty chilly – cold enough for several layers in the evening. I usually take additional blankets with me on camping trips, but didn’t this time.

Where to next?

Despite this camping trip being a solo one, I still opted to take the double Contour Lux with me simply because it packs down relatively small (for such a big, cosy sleeping bag) and it’s always warm and cosy to use.

Turns out, chilly as it was, I didn’t need any extra layers and I remained super warm and snug, even though it was just me inside the cavernous double.

I love cotton-feel sleeping bags and can’t stand crinkly ones that feel like you’re either sleeping inside a giant packet of crisps or trapped inside a sweaty polythene bag, instead, the Contour Lux feels cotton-soft against the skin.

One of the things that I love most is how the zips and baffles have been designed so that when using the zips you don’t get the inside of the sleeping bag stuck in the zip. It’s such a thoughtful addition, and it makes a huge difference to ease of use, easily avoiding annoying zip snags.

There is a built-in pillow section, but I wouldn’t recommend relying on this alone and you’ll still definitely want to take your usual pillow with you, it does however help keep the sleeping bag in place when two people are using it.

Another great thing about this sleeping bag is that it’s pretty much modular and you can use it in any number of different configurations. If you don’t want to use the pillow area, you can simply uzip it. You can use the sleeping bag as a double, unzip it to create two duvets or you have the option of using it as two singles and of course you can decide which way up you want the sleeping bag.

It’s also easy to pack away too, just stuffing it into the high-quality compression bag. The versatility, the performance and the quality of the Contour Lux means we give it a full 5 stars, something that doesn’t happen often!

Some of the features I particularly like include the fluorescent, easy-to-see toggle and zips. On a similar note, the sleeping bag unzips fully providing greater versatility, which along with the zip-off pillow section means you can use this sleeping bag in any number of ways.

This is a superb sleeping bag with all the quality you’d expect from Outwell. There are some fabulously well-thought-out features that make this sleeping bag an excellent choice that you’ll love using on your camping trips for many years to come.
