The burnt orange shade of this jacket provides a vibrant pop of colour on a grey day, and whilst it’s not the typical colour I’d choose (I’m usually a lover of pinks, lilacs, purples and teals) I love that it’s vibrant without being too garish.
To test out the unisex credentials of the Bergen, I got my 6.1″ husband to try it on, he then promptly attempted to permanently ‘borrow’ it from me. Although he is slim, he’s tall and broad and the jacket fit him exceptionally well across the body, giving him a roomier fit through the hips compared to the closer fit on my far curvier frame.

This jacket is likely to swamp shorter ladies though. I’m above average height at 5.6″ and I found the sleeves quite long on me as a result of the jacket being unisex. That said, there are buttons on the sleeves that allow you to adjust and cinch them in.
From a practical point of view, the Gandys Bergen has everything I look for in a good quality outdoor jacket, it’s lightweight but provides good coverage, it’s adjustable in all of the right places and it has plenty of secure pockets too.

The jacket is a generous fit and a fantastic length (I’m 5.6″). I chose the UK14 / L and it fits me well (I’m typically a 16 / XL), though it is relatively slim fitting around my big hips. So if you want a closer fit, you might find you can size down with this jacket or for the intended relaxed fit, stick with your usual size.
In terms of performance, the taped seams will keep you dry in a heavy downpour and the arms are a great length for pulling your hands inside on chilly days. The hood is pretty large, so it would easily accommodate a bike helmet, beanie hat (or indeed my husband’s gigantic planet-bonce), and there are toggles at the neck for cinching things in a little more.
Final verdict
This is a lovely quality jacket with some good technical features and the fact that it’s unisex is an added bonus, enhancing the versatility of this jacket, whilst the burnt orange colourway is vibrant without being obnoxious.
