I decided I wanted to go on a solo hike over the recent bank holiday weekend, and was looking for glamping accommodation in the Loch Tay area. When I spotted them online I fell in love with the funky looking Armadillas and immediately made a booking. I wanted cosy and hassle-free accommodation that would still let me feel like I was close to nature and the Armadillas gave me exactly that.
What did I think?
The location of the pods is utterly stunning. I approached from Killin, turning right at the Falls of Dochart (very pretty and worth a visit), then it was a 25 minute drive down a single lane road. It certainly keeps you on your toes, but with fabulous views of Loch Tay on your left and plenty of places to pull in, I found myself actually enjoying the road, though I’d certainly recommend taking it slowly.
The Armadillas sit within the garden of Holly Cottage, a pretty little property with a beautiful wild cottage garden. I was greeted by the owners on arrival; It’s always nice to receive such a warm welcome, particularly after a long journey, and both Rosemary and Phil who I chatted to over the course of my stay were truly lovely, and full of helpful advice about the local area.
Now there’s a view I could never get bored of!
The weather during the whole weekend was perfect. Bright sunshine and very warm, so much of the time I had the front door wide open and the large round rear window open too, which let a lovely breeze waft through.
Lying down inside the pod with the door open, all I could hear was birdsong and the view out over Loch Tay was utterly stunning. I don’t think I could ever get bored of a view like that!
There were lots of lovely little touches that made me feel right at home. The shortbread left out for me was just too delicious to resist and over the course of my 4 day stay, I steadily worked my way through it all. After going out each day sitting outside munching on shortbread with a steaming mug of coffee was a lovely way to relax.
I found that the accommodation had everything I needed for an easy and hassle-free stay. The little en-suite shower room was brilliant and it felt very space-age too. I was delighted to find a little fridge in the Armadilla, which was a great help when it came to keeping drinks cold. I was impressed too to find not the usual plain white crockery you normally encounter in self-catering accommodation, but gorgeous Denby! I was also surprised to find I had excellent mobile phone reception (Vodafone) and WiFi that was faster than my connection at home.
The garden that the two Armadillas are located within is very pretty and full of wildlife
Everything was well thought out, from the TV and DVD player with a stack of DVDs to choose from to free tea and coffee provided. The breakfast basket (an optional extra) is highly recommended and it was packed full of tasty goodies including fresh fruit, juice, milk, croissants and museli.
I also have to mention the lighting. As someone very sensitive to bright lights, I’m so obsessed with mood lighting that I even have a little rechargable mood light that I take everywhere with me. The Armadilla features two panels on the wall, one to control the temperature and the other to control the mood lighting which allows you to choose any colours that you want to light the space. Once the bed was made up too, there were handily positioned reading lights, and I found the bed comfy, and slept soundly on all three nights.

During my stay I visited Ben Lawers Nature Reserve, hiked up Beinn Ghlas and Ben Lawers and I spent an afternoon at Taymouth Marina padding in a kayak on Loch Tay. The area is absolutely beautiful and for hiking, cycling and waterports, the Loch Tay Armadillas make a brilliant base.
I had the most wonderful stay and thoroughly recommend Loch Tay Armadillas to anyone looking for glamping accommodation in the Killin/Loch Tay area.
