What we thought

It’s no secret that we love a good cup of coffee and even when camping, instant doesn’t cut it for us. As a result, we’ve tried everything from coffee bags (better than instant, but not brilliant) and all manner of gadgets and gismos promising the perfect brew.

Add to that the fact I like my coffee black and strong, and the Staresso Espresso maker looked like it had great potential to meet our coffee-drinking needs when out and about on numerous our camping and glamping adventures.

The verdict

We love the Staresso Portable Espresso maker and find, combined with freshly ground coffee beans, that it makes the perfect brew. As I’m super fussy about my coffee and like it strong, this is ideal and whilst I don’t tend to knock back an Espresso in the true sense, I’m able to double up the amount to give me the perfect small, strong, black coffee.

The press mechanism doesn’t require too much effort and results in a pleasing process. My husband who manually grinds our beans fresh each time, commented that he really enjoys the hands-on feel of using this Espresso maker.

Whilst I’m more on the side of convenience and minimal faff, I still enjoyed using the Staresso Espresso maker and the resulting coffee has been fabulous every time with a lovely depth of crema on top that we both really enjoy. We also found that for the best brew, it’s best to heat up the stainless steel cup first by pouring boiling water into it then tipping it out.

Clean-up is fairly straightforward and a matter of taking it apart and rinsing under the tap, which takes very little time and we both really like the fact that you can drink your Espresso straight from the glass cup if you want to.

Staresso portable Espresso maker

With a retail price of £69.99 it’s certainly not the cheapest option out there, but it offers really solid performance and after a month of use at home and when traveling, it’s well-made and we think that it’s worth the price.
