What I thought
From the moment I tore open the delivery packaging, I just loved this jacket. I know, that seems quite profound. But there is just something about it that presses a lot of my buttons.
What worked well for me
The colour
It’s not sunny yellow, it’s not egg yolk yellow, it’s not mustard either. It’s a nice punchy colour but just stops short of assaulting the senses with over the top tones. As a result it reminds me very much of late autumn gorse in flower.
The fabric
The jacket is made out of waterproof polyester that doesn’t rustle too much. It is quite waterproof too. Sadly for this review, the rainy weather cleared off almost as soon as the jacket turned up so I’ve dutifully tested it under the shower!
The lining
It’s a rain jacket that has a full body lining. That lining goes all the way everywhere, including the sleeves. No clammy pressing up against bare arms if you throw this sucker on against a sudden summer shower here.
The body lining matches the tasteful yellow of the jacket, with a narrow navy horizontal stripe running through it. If you’re wearing the jacket open, the lining breaks up the field of yellow nicely without making you look like a giant bumblebee.
The fit
Although I measured up as a size 12, I ordered a size 14 because I saw great potential in this as a waterproof layer on cooler days out. The fit is great, even in the slightly bigger size, and the integrated waist cord can still pull in the silhouette for me to stop excessive wind flap.
The details
It’s not heavy, it’s quite light and it folds up reasonably small to go in a stuff sack while out hiking. I have long arms and the sleeves come all the way down to my wrists, with a lovely little velcro tightener at the cuff. The zip pull has a toggle attached and the logos are discrete.
What could have gone better for me
Although the pockets are decent sized, if you’re a pack rat like I am, you need to think carefully about your pocket use. There are no zipped pockets in this jacket, all three pockets are popper close only. There are also no internal pockets and this seems like a bit of a missed opportunity in an outdoorsy kind of jacket.
The body lining is a nice stretchy kind of jersey but the sleeve lining is a more solid kind of polyester. It would have been a super nice touch to have the lining matching all the way through the jacket.
The zip is a yellow plastic to match the jacket colour. While this adds a touch of class to the look, my experiences with plastic zips are that they simply don’t last as long as metal toothed zips so I’m hoping this one turns out to be durable.
The final verdict
In conclusion, this jacket is definitely a great addition to my wardrobe and a keeper for me. As well as wearing it on walks out and about with the changeable weather, I’ve been throwing it on against the cooler morning breeze lately. It’s lightweight and packable, so it’s easy to pop away into my bag late in the afternoon when the sun comes back out.
