Nestled between two beautiful beaches, Coco’s Antigua is an adult-only boutique hotel exclusively for couples. The small size of the hotel means guests receive great levels of service – all with views that are hard to beat. Read on for our full candid review.

The verdict

The location of Coco’s is stunning. It sits on a small piece of elevated headland in between two beautiful beaches. The resort is small, with just 35 individual cottages dotted amongst the hills, which makes it big enough to have a decent number of facilities, but small enough that guests benefit from great service.

We stayed in a premium view cottage and were treated to incredible sunset views over the sea each night, making it well worth the additional cost in our opinion.

The bedrooms aren’t huge, but they are certainly big enough and the large king-size four-poster beds are amongst the most comfortable beds we’ve ever slept on… and those pillows!

The grounds and public areas are all well-kept and spotlessly clean with a lovely vibrant sea turquoise running throughout the property and grounds.. There are flowers and palm trees everywhere and it was lovely to regularly see Hummingbirds.

Prior to arrival, we sent the hotel our in-room mini-bar preferences and this was restocked daily for us, ensuring plenty to drink once back in our room.

The food at Coco’s was good, rather than great and this was down largely to a lack of choice and the fact that many items were routinely cold, including things like potato wedges (shown below).

We knew in advance to expect small portions and we did find the portion sizes very small, sometimes more akin to the portion sizes you might expect from an 8 or 9 course tasting menu, that said, we felt like there was just enough to stave off hunger, though we did end up topping up with a bar snack of jerk chicken and salad (shown below) each day!

Being A La Carte instead of the usual all-inclusive buffet style, was nice. Remaining seated and being served is so much more dignified, but with the option of just one or two starters and no more than three mains to choose from, we found the menu extremely limited.

Each morning at breakfast there was a smoothie of the day, and these were excellent. The cocktails though were mostly mediocre, with a couple of good ones and a couple of really bad ones, and we found them inconsistent. A Coco’s Cooler at one bar would look and taste totally different when ordered at a different bar for example.

The beaches are the main draw here and whilst there is a lovely little pool just set back from the beach with great sea views, we spent most of our time in the sea or seeking shade on the beach. With plenty of sun loungers for the exclusive use of Coco’s guests on both beaches, it was always easy to find somewhere out of the sun to chill.

The sunsets were spectacular, truly beautiful and despite not being sentimental types, even we had to admit sitting together on the beach or on our balcony with a cocktail as the sun went down was pretty romantic.

We confess to doing very little whilst we were there apart from swimming, reading and taking in the views! Should you wish to explore further afield or you fancy an excursion (Cades Reef snorkeling was on our list) the hotel can arrange it all for you.

We preferred Valley Chruch beach to Jolly beach, but both are stunning with clear blue sea, gently lapping at the shore and virtually no currents.

We did spot a couple of rays buried in the sand at Valley Church beach, a few fish and even a baby shark, but largely, neither beach is particularly good for snorkeling, perfect for floating, swimming and paddling though!

Meals are all a la carte so no buffet-style self-service
Stunning views from almost everywhere
Decent in-room mini bar
Outdoor showers are wonderful
Premium view cottages are well worth the extra cost
Free use of kayaks and snorkeling gear for guests
BBQ jerk chicken and salad afternoon bar snacks were really good
Staff were friendly and helpful
The addition of a hammock on the balcony was lovely

Cons

Limited menu options and very small portion sizes
Some guests may dislike the steep hills, particularly if unfit
Inconsistent quality of food and drink
We don’t go away to watch TV, but some guests may dislike not having a TV in their room

Final verdict

Coco’s is a lovely hotel with great staff and decent, but not great food. The location is absolutely superb, the guest cottages are spotlessly clean and comfortable and the views from the balcony and shower, are amongst the best I’ve ever encountered on my travels, including multiple visits to the Maldives!

That said, a narrow menu and inconsistent quality of both food and drink, do let Coco’s down. We enjoyed our few days there, but we’re glad we hadn’t booked to stay there for a full week or even longer for our honeymoon as we feel the narrow food choices would have become more of an issue over time.

It manages to strike a great balance between polished high-class luxury and laid-back rustic.

The location is undeniably beautiful and in terms of romance, it certainly delivers; the vibe of the hotel is perfect. It manages to strike a great balance between polished high-class luxury and laid-back rustic. We enjoyed our stay, but it’s not somewhere we’d choose to return to.

We flew to Antigua at the start of July from London Gatwick with BA and stayed at Coco’s Hotel near Jolly Harbour, Antigua. We paid £330 per night for an all-inclusive premium view cottage. This trip was self-funded and not supported by any sponsors.
