What we thought

Those of you familiar with the blog will know how much I love being warm and cosy. In fact, nothing brings me more joy than the simple pleasure of howling wind and rain hammering against my tent when I’m warm and cosy inside.

My quest for cosiness means I never pack light, and always pack for every eventuality. You’ll often find a hot water bottle, fleece and extra ‘just in case’ blankets packed whenever I go camping, regardless of the time of year, because if there’s one thing that’s predictable about the great British weather, it’s just how unpredictable it can be.

Despite an entire month of glorious weather and a cracking early May bank holiday, the late May bank holiday was an entirely different proposition. Less than 24 hours before I was due to set off for a 4-day solo camping trip to the Yorkshire Dales, the weather turned, necessitating a quick and thorough repack.

After replacing all of my summer clothes with jumpers and waterproofs, the doorbell rang, and with what felt like perfect timing, I took delivery of the Thaw Heated Wrap. I wasted no time in opening it up and putting the power pack on charge, ready to take away with me.

4 hours on the lowest heat setting isn’t a huge amount of time, but it is definitely long enough to keep the chill off when the weather turns. Thankfully, I’m currently using the Anker 555 portable power station, which means I can take devices like this away with me and easily recharge them. Take a look at our Tried & Tested – Best Portable Power Stations For Camping round-up here.

Looks-wise, when worn, the wrap looks like something from the Balenciaga autumn/winter collection. To clarify, I like it. It’s super snuggly and furry on the inside, which feels lovely and there’s a zip on the front allowing it to be worn as a wrap, or you can unzip it and pop it on top of your camp bed on particularly chilly nights.

Although it does come with a bag, I’m not sure how long it will last – a nylon carry bag might provide more longevity, but for now, it’s holding up and doing its job. The little power pack can easily be detached to charge and is then stowed away in an internal pocket with a velcro closure during use.

The portable power pack supplied has an LED indicator on it which serves a dual purpose of showing how much power is left and when charging via the supplied USB cable, the lights blink, showing the current charging status.

The power pack did take a good few hours to charge. On arrival, it was showing 1 out of 4 indicator lights lit. Plugged into the mains, it then took a further 4.5 hours to fully charge. Once charged, though, it gave me plenty of warmth on a particularly cold evening, sheltering inside my tent with the rain lashing down and 45mph winds.

After wearing it as a cape when the temperature dropped, I then switch to using it as an additional layer on top of my sleeping bag and blanket and oh boy did I need it! The weather rarely beats me, but on this occasion, I lasted 2 nights without much sleep before packing up a day early and heading home. Had I not taken the Thaw Gear rechargeable wrap with me, I would have bailed even sooner.

This is a versatile bit of gear that’s not only ideal for camping but perfect for snuggling up on the sofa and I’ve also used it a few times in the garden as an extra layer beside our chimenea. For the perpetually cold, the cosy and versatile Thaw Rechargeable Heated Wrap makes a great investment.
