WALKING GEAR | Falke TK2 Merino Hiking Socks Review
What are they?
I tested 2 pairs of socks;
- TK2 Crest Women’s Trekking Socks £23 or try Amazon.co.uk
- TK2 Short Ribbons Trekking Socks £20 or try Amazon.co.uk
The verdict
Both pair of socks include a Merino wool mix making them good for insulation and ideal for hiking in any weather conditions and both pairs of socks come in bright funky colours, something I always look for in pretty much all outdoor gear that I use!
One of the most important things I look for in walking socks however is padding, primarily on my heel and at the ball of my foot. Padding in these areas always makes a long walk far more comfortable and helps to stop my feet getting tired too quickly so I’m a big fan of padded hiking socks and was delighted that both pairs featured medium padding in key areas.
Although the padding isn’t too severe and I do have hiking socks that have more padded soles, I found that both pairs of socks provided a really good level of comfort.
I’ve worn my Falke socks a lot since they arrived, from long walks with the dog in the countryside to a woodland trail walk in Wales. I find them exceptionally comfortable, keeping my feet dry and warm, but without feeling sweaty. The longer socks are ideal for cold-weather walks and the shorter ones are ideal for use on hikes in any season!
Length wise, for hiking I generally choose a longer sock, and I wasn’t sure that the shorter TK2 sock would work well with my hiking boots, but as you can see, they are plenty long enough.
Initially, I thought that the longer socks would be my favourite as I usually always choose longer socks for hikes, but actually, I really like the shorter pair and have probably chosen to wear those more frequently than the longer ones.
Final thoughts
- Nice level of padding which makes both pairs of socks comfortable to wear on long walks
- Good regulation of temperature, they keep my feet warm without making them feel gross and sweaty
- The socks stay put and didn’t slide down whilst I’m walking
- I really like the funky designs and colours on both pairs
- Great quality and they wash really well too
Although these socks aren’t cheap, I’ve learned that paying a bit extra for Merino is usually worth it and these socks are no exception. Falke have a reputation for quality and these are hiking socks that won’t disappoint.
I definitely prefer the shorter length sock (much to my surprise) and despite usually wearing walking boots that sit high on my ankle, both the short and long socks perform well. The long socks in particular are great for hiking in woodland as they provide added protection from brambles and such like.
