At £130 a pop, these are far from being a casual purchase, so In order to do them justice I’ve recently updated this review following a serious weekend of hiking in the Scottish Highlands.

Heel loop, making the boots easy to put on and take off

As a snowboarder who’s owned 2 pairs of Salomon boarding boots in the past, I knew that I could expect quality and comfort, and upon initial unboxing, I wasn’t disappointed. They did look quite chunky initially, and I double checked to ensure they were the right size. Once on however, they didn’t feel as big or clompy as they’d initially looked.

I’m a size 6 with a flat arch and feet that are on the narrow side, and these boots fitted perfectly and felt immediately comfortable. I headed straight into the woodland beside my house for my first walk in them. So far so good.

A few days later we headed off into the Cheshire countryside on a longer 5 mile walk. The ground was boggy in places, and we wandered off into the undergrowth to grab shots of fungi which required clambouring over logs and tramping through mud.

The boots are a great fit and are extremely sturdy, yet light and most importantly, they feel comfortable – but how did they cope with a weekend of serious hiking in the Scottish Highlands in torrential rain and in snow?

After clocking up another 15 miles in these boots, half of those miles were done on a mountain in pretty harsh conditions. On day 1 we had non-stop rain. As I climbed the mountain we splashed through puddles, walked through streams, climbed over flat, wet rocks and on day 2, near the top of Beinn Ghlas, we were hiking on steep, rocky terrain in an inch of snow.

What I like most

  • They were immediately comfortable; no having to wear them in at all. We went for an easy countryside walk in them, then spent 4 hours walking in the Cheshire countryside and they were still comfy, with no pressure points.
  • Having a removable foot-bed is brilliant, as much of the time I wear custom orthotics to combat my over pronation, so being able to slip the foot-bed out and put in my own was a revelation.
  • Incredible grip from the sole, I felt steady and confident.
  • The boots are great in any terrain, from snow, to slippery wet rocks and mud.
  • Great support around the ankle and good levels of cushioning.
  • Having narrow feet means I often end up over tightening laces to stop my feet lifting out of the boot when I walk. In these however, thanks to the ladies specific last, my heel stayed put, and I didn’t get the movement I often get in my cheaper walking boots or in my snow boots.

Any downsides?

  • I’d have liked a bit more colour; as far as walking boots go they look pretty standard and the use of the word 3D always irks me. Apart from that, I haven’t got anything bad to say about them.

The last word

The boots are incredible. I stayed, warm and dry and never put a foot wrong. They coped brilliantly with snow, and just as well on wet slippery surfaces. They didn’t rub, and my feet didn’t hurt or feel tired (though the muscles in my legs certainly did!). Superb performance. Over 2 years on and I am still loving their performance and am really happy with these boots.

Long Term Test Update

I’ve now had these boots for over 2 years and they are still performing really well. I’ve cleaned them a few times, and the leather is due to be retreated as they are looking a bit ‘dry’, however, they are still water tight, showing no real signs of wear and they remain a fantastic walking boot!
