The verdict
Skandika are a German outdoors manufacturer who have a huge range of tents and out camping gear. We tested the Skandika Nordland 6 in the harshest conditions possible. We arrived at our coastal camp site to be greeted by extremely high winds, which made pitching a challenge. Due to the wind, it took 4 of us to pitch, though in normal conditions it would be easy enough for 2 to manage.
With large family tents, the cost of having so much space is usually an increase in set up time with all those extra poles, guy ropes and pegs that need tackling. We found the tent very quick and intuitive to put up, the whole thing was up and pegged down, guys and all, in less than 20 minutes. We loved the sturdy steel poles, which always put my mind at ease in windy conditions, though we did puzzle over the porch area for a while, before we found the anchor points for the ends of the poles.
The tent has an immense waterproof rating of 5,000mm, and during a torrential rain storm which lasted a full 8 hours, we were thankfully kept mostly dry. A weak point in many previous tents is the seam running across the top of the tent, where the bedroom inner is attached to the flysheet. We’ve often encountered drips on this seam after heavy rain, and the Nordland 6 did let in some drops of water here, though not enough for any puddles to form inside thankfully.
Internal space
The space inside the tent is fantastic, ideal for a family, and though we had the tent set up to sleep just 2, we spent a comfortable evening inside the living area with 4 adults, and there was ample space for us all to sit around playing board games.
There were 6 windows in the living area alone, (excluding the 3 doors), which made for an extremely light and airy feel inside. All windows have simple velcro tabs, allowing them to be opened or closed with ease. Having 3 doors is quite unusual in a tent of this size, but it provided added flexibility, and one of the side doors can be used to provide a shaded area, thanks to the separate poles provided.
We always like seeing large bedrooms with dividers. Splitting a space into 2 means much more flexibility and gives mum and dad privacy from older kids, yet with younger children, it means you are still reassuringly close to them.
There was plenty of room in the bedroom for a total of 4 single camp beds, comfortably accommodating 4. If you wish to sleep 6, you’d need to use a small double and a single airbed in each bedroom, alternatively, the use of 6 single self-inflating mats, which tend to be much narrower, would suffice.
Final Say
We think this is an excellent quality tent, ideal for UK camping in all seasons, thanks to a higher than usual standard of waterproofing. The large internal space and flexible configuration make this an ideal choice for families.
We’ve seen the Skandika Nordland 6 for around £250 which is an incredible price for such a large and good quality tent. Invest in a tent carpet, and you should be able to alleviate the issue we had with air inflating the groundsheet.
Buying a tent from a brand that isn’t widely known in the UK can seem like a gamble, but that just isn’t the case with this tent. If you like the look of the Outwell Montana 6P or the Vango Avington 600, but don’t quite have the budget, then the Skandika Nordland 6 is definitely worth considering.
