As of last November we moved away from our urban home and to a more suburban location, with the countryside close enough to take public transport past every day on the way to work. My child is a Cub Scout now. These two factors mean that our investment in the right gear for the situation has stepped up a notch.

As an adult I have mixed feelings about wellies. Mostly because I know that I spent a great deal of my youth slopping around in freezing cold wellies that didn’t quite fit. There’s no denying, though, that there are certain scenarios where having good wellington boots really makes a difference. Notably, when it’s really, really wet. We wouldn’t hike in them, but for wearing in the garden when it’s raining or for learning what lakes and rivers are, I’m not sure there’s a better choice.

About the boots

The fit was good on these boots. It can be hard to get the right fit on kid’s boots. At the moment my child is 1.5 size on one foot and 1.75 size on the other. The shoe shop did something nothing short of magic to find school shoes that were a good fit. These boots do just fine in a size 2 and an extra pair of socks. I’m hoping they will last through to winter.

The boots themselves are pretty solid, the seams are durably sealed. Pull handles have proved to be a weak spot with other kids wellies of past associations. The handles on these will have to endure a few months of wear before I can return a balanced verdict, but at the moment they’re good.

The soles are particularly impressive with good deep cleats that didn’t slip much on wet stone or on damp mud. As a consequence, Robin perched quite precariously at the top of a steep bank to hurl bread at swans and other unsuspecting water fowl without too many qualms on my part.

Suse’s verdict

Overall these are good wellingtons, well made and with good grip. The pull handles seem well made and I’ll feed back again later in the year after extended testing. They are available in enough different colours and patterns that I think most kids will find something to appeal to them.

They are light enough to carry in a backpack easily so you can hike in proper walking footwear and switch to these when the going gets splashy.

We love them and I’m happy. So yes, I’d cheerfully recommend these.
