Looking for a cute and colourful sleeping bag that will keep your kids warm on your next camping trip? We’ve put together a handy kid’s sleeping bag guide and found some of the best kids’ sleeping bags around…

Kids’ Sleeping Bag Guide

When choosing a sleeping bag for your child, it’s vital to find the perfect blend of warmth, comfort, plus a sprinkle of magic! Products aimed at kids’ are usually wonderfully bright and colourful and happily, sleeping bags are no exception.

Armed with this quick handy guide, your little adventurers will be all set for dreamy nights camping under the stars.

Form over function

When considering kids’ sleeping bags, it’s super important to not just consider the way it looks. Sleeping bags for children are designed to grab attention and appeal visually to little campers, so whilst your child might be drawn to a particular design, do consider the fact that some children’s sleeping bags are only really meant for indoor sleepover use or at best, light summer camping.

It can sometimes be better to overlook the design and choose something instead from a trusted camping brand like Outwell, Vango etc. This way you’ll know you’re getting a product designed specifically for camping rather than just indoor sleepovers, and will be more likely to have features similar to those found on your own sleeping bag.

Seasonal snuggling

The UK weather can be a bit tricky to say the least, so consider the time of year that you’ll be camping when selecting a sleeping bag. For chilly spring or autumn nights, a three-season bag will be your best option.

What do you do though if the kid’s sleeping bag you’ve identified doesn’t mention a season or tog rating? Our advice is to assume it’s a light, summer-weight sleeping bag where no rating is available, as warmer sleeping bags that are designed to be fit for camping are far more likely to include crucial information like the season or tog rating.

Test for toastiness

It’s not a bad idea to let your mini-camper test the sleeping bag before the big camping trip. Have a garden campout to ensure they’re snug as a bug before venturing to a wilder campsite!

Zip test

Sometimes when a sleeping bag is particularly well-stuffed and is designed without a baffle, zips can get stuck making them tricky to use. This usually happens when fabric gets snagged inside the zip as it’s moved up and down and it really can cause panic, especially if your child is using a snug mummy bag.

Ensure then that you test the zipper fully before letting your little one use a new sleeping bag and show them how to use the zipper in a way that minimises the chance of getting fabric snagged inside.

Give them the choice

Once you’ve short-listed options based on functionality, let your little ones cast the deciding vote and give them a say in the colour or design of their sleeping bag.

A touch of personalisation can turn their sleeping space into a magical camping haven that they’ll love and getting them into bed at night won’t be a challenge!

Space matters

Choose a sleeping bag that’s much too big and it will have a tougher job of keeping your little one warm. However, if you choose a sleeping bag that’s too small you could find that they outgrow it before the camping season is even over, so it can be tricky to get the balance right.

It makes more sense though, particularly for fair-weather campers, to choose a sleeping bag that’s a little larger than currently needed and then simply provide additional blankets if needed.
