Is it a shoe or is it a slipper? The answer is yes, it is both. the big difference here is that the soles of most slippers aren’t really made for outdoor use but the Howser is designed with a degree of outdoor use in mind, so the sole is sturdy and grippy.
The Keen Howser III is available for both men and women and I rather like the men’s olive green lightly quilted design and whilst I love the multi/desert colour that I was sent, I’m not keen on the other women’s colour options which are a bit dull for my aesthetic (as you can see from my choice of leggings below).
The shoe is quite big, I’m a size 6 with regular to slightly narrow feet and it just about stays on my foot without the need to cinch up the bungee cord, but they are definitely roomy enough to wear with thick socks, so if you’re in between sizes, you’ll probably be able to size down with these.
The bungee cord is a great addition and is new to the updated Howser design. It means, if you do need a snugger fit e.g. when wearing without socks or when you’re leaving the tent or van to go and do the washing up or whatever, the bungee and toggle design can be easily adjusted.
I should stress that even though mine are slightly big, the heel cup ensures they stay on my feet, so whilst they are slides, your foot is held in place thanks to the small heel cup.
Pros
- Wide range of sizes/style available for both men and women though really, they are a unisex shoe
- Great comfort and versatility
- Can be worn outside as a shoe
- Ideal for campers, van owners and glamping
- Comfortable to wear all-day
- Adjustable bungee for a snug fit
- Great for slinging on after a day of hiking or being out on the slopes
Cons
- Limited colour options and patterns

I’m finding these slides are my go-to choice for wearing around the house and as I’m still working wholly from home, they’ve rarely left my feet. They allow me to effortlessly transition into having a potter around the garden at lunchtime or tending to my garden veggies without needing to switch footwear and I love the colour of mine.
The other colour options I’m not too keen on (no pun inteded) and I think the limited colours & designs could well limit their appeal. I’d love to see funkier patterns and more vibrant colourways added, instead of the somewhat dull-looking colours and checked designs they offer that makes me think of ‘dad’ slippers.
For camping, glamping and ski trips they are ideal, they take up little space, provide a good amount of warmth and are comfortable enough to wear all day long, especially when inside the tent or knocking around the campsite, making them the ideal camping shoe, just bear in mind they aren’t designed to be waterproof.
The Keen Howeser III once again, proves there is never any excuse or need in this world for the hideous existence of Crocs when there are alternatives like the Keen Howser III available.
