What we thought
Around 10 minutes drive away from the wonderful Carding Mill Valley, this campsite is a haven for fishing, with a variety of well-stocked fishing lakes, and as the name of this campsite suggests, you can indeed camp almost right beside your chosen fishing spot.
We spent 4 days at Church Stretton Camp & Fish, and whilst it was relatively quiet due to the time of year, the lakes were popular and those fishing as well as the other campers, were among the most friendly folk we’ve ever come across.
The same can be said for the lovely team who take care of this family-run site and we felt extremely welcome and relaxed the entire time we were there.
Location wise, the campsite offers the perfect blend of rural seclusion and natural beauty, whilst providing a multitude things to do within a half hour drive away.
We had many grand plans for days out, including walking and visiting Iron Bridge, but the weather was so perfect and we felt so utterly relaxed at the site that I have to confess, we did very little!
We did venture out to spend one day in Ludlow where we enjoyed meandering around the quaint town and stopped for a bite to eat. On another day we tore ourselves away from a full-schedule of relaxing to go into Church Stretton. Another lovely little town with some fabulous places to eat including Berry’s, a tea room with hands down the best scones we’ve ever tasted.
The verdict
For anyone that fishes, then this campsite is a no brainer and an absolute must. But don’t feel like you need to fish to love this campsite.
The woodland which provides secluded pitches with a wild camping feel, lakside pitches with beautiful views of both the lakes and woods and the huge camping meadow means there are camping pitches to suit every taste.
If you want to camp in the woods, you’ll need to carry your camping gear to your pitch and the same goes for those wanting to camp right beside the lake like we did, so if you want to park next to your tent, a meadow pitch could be the better option.
As well as the fishing lakes, there’s also a ‘swimming hole’ on site. Somewhere in between the size of a large pond and a small lake, despite being a lover of outdoor swimming, I was recovering from an operation during my stay and was unable to swim – a great excuse for me to return though!
We loved that you could just grab a firepit and generous boxes of fire wood and kindling can be purchased for a very reasonable £5, and barbecues kept off the ground are also allowed at this site.
One thing I will point out is that there are no pitches with electric hookups on site as it stands and it’s a site that is definitely on the off-grid and rustic side of things. Though the facilities were always clean, don’t expect anything too fancy, bring a torch and loo roll with you, and enjoy truly getting back to nature at this stunning campsite.
We loved wandering around the woods and just chilling beside the lake reading and talking and it’s a campsite we thoroughly recommend and we’ll definitely return to.
