Fun & Functional – Therawear Cotton Compression Socks Review

TheraWear makes graduated knee-high compression socks in a breathable cotton blend, and with more than 40 styles to choose from, there’s something for everyone. Read on to find out what we thought.

Who are they designed for?

If you’re on your feet all day, sitting still for hours, or just like your legs to feel a bit less heavy by the evening, compression socks can help. These are firmest at the ankle and gradually loosen towards the knee, which helps your calf muscles push blood back up, resulting in improved circulation.

I first came across compression socks a few decades ago, after media coverage warned about long-haul flights and the increased risk of DVT (deep vein thrombosis). At that time, the options were limited, so I bought a pair of plain black compression socks and wore them every time I flew. Practical yes, stylish they were not.

Fast forward to lockdown, when I started running. Once again I turned to compression socks, which seemed to help with calf ache and that heavy-legged feeling the day after a run.

At 51, I’m currently learning the basics of stable management. Whether I’m riding or on yard duties, these socks fit easily under breeches or leggings. They add an extra layer against the chill on frosty mornings and keep my legs feeling less tired after a day on my feet.

What think

These are lovely socks with fun, vibrant patterns and in the photos, I’m wearing the Sleepy Fox compression socks and they are such a welcome change from the beige or black boring, medical-looking options of old. They’re rated 15–20 mmHg, which is the moderate, everyday strength of compression, so they feel supportive without feeling like your legs are being slowly vacuum-packed.

There’s a knack to getting them on, and they do feel tight as you roll them up, but once in place they are extremely comfy, they don’t cut off circulation or dig in anywhere and are comfortable for all-day wear.

I’m a size 5.5 with an average calf size, and I chose size S/M. The socks are also available in L/XL across the full range, with XXL in many styles and extended sizes up to 6XL in some of the plain designs. It’s worth measuring your calf and ankle against the size chart before you order, and If you’re between sizes, TheraWear recommends going up.
