What we thought

This is my first article of Trespass clothing and the jacket has definitely exceeded my expectations. I’ve worn the Matilda on lots of autumn walks, in all weathers. From bright and relatively warm days to cold and wet days and it has performed really well in all conditions.

Features

The jacket has large pockets on the outside, which meant for shorter local walks, I didn’t need to take a bag out with me as there is enough space in my pockets for my phone, face mask, keys and cash.

The jacket has an 8,000mm waterproof rating and is breathable too and In the Peak District last weekend, the weather was pretty grim! I got caught in a couple of torrential downpours and with the hood cinched in, I stayed warm and dry.

The jacket coped well with about 20 minutes of very heavy rain

As well as the waterproofing, the breathability of the jacket, in particular, has really impressed me.

On hill walks, I can often get quite warm even in cool weather, leading to me overheating, but the breathability of the Matilda is excellent. On cold and windy days I could happily wear a thick jumper underneath when out walking, whilst on warmer days wearing a thinner top underneath, I found I didn’t overheat at all.

Practicality

The length of the jacket makes it perfect for bad weather. It comes down to well below the hips completely covering my bum, making this one of the longest jackets I have and Ideal for sitting down on damp surfaces.

The sleeves are quite a generous size which means you can wear layers and still move freely, and they have a velcro adjuster on the cuffs so you can cinch them in should you wish to.

Styling

I had been looking for a decent jacket that I could use when out and about every day. I have a couple of outdoor jackets, the sort I’d grab for a day hike in the hills and I have jackets I’d wear for a night out, but not really anything in between.

On a glamping trip wearing the Matilda

The Styling of the Matilda, particularly in black, means it has a versatile look that’s as suitable for country walks as it is for slinging on to nip out to the shops.

This is a really versatile softshell jacket that’s easy to wear and is ideal for cooler, wet weather.

Looks wise, the jacket is fairly plain and doesn’t really have any standout features, with subtle Trespass branding on the sleeve and on one pocket. I do like the high neck on the jacket which is ideal for keeping cold and rain out in bad weather, but I did find with it zipped up to the top, I needed to pull up my Buff to avoid it rubbing on my chin.

Pros

  • Excellent breathability, I never overheat when wearing the Matilda
  • Great long length for good coverage in bad weather
  • 2 high funnel neck and good size hood to help keep wind and rain out
  • Huge pockets you can fit lots into
  • The sleeves of the jacket are wide enough to allow you to wear layers underneath
  • Huge range of sizes available from XXS up to XXXL
  • Very good waterproofing
  • The hood can be easily cinched in to give a tight fit, ideal in bad weather

Cons

  • I’d love a few more styling features, as the jacket is quite plain
  • I found the high neck rubbed my chin when done all the way up

This is a really versatile softshell jacket that’s easy to wear and is ideal for cooler, wet weather. Over the past few weeks It has been my go-to jacket for autumn walks but I’ve found it’s perfect for everyday use too. I’m also really impressed by the fact that it’s available in such a wide range of sizes from a UK 6 up to a UK 20.

I’m not sure I’d personally stretch to the full price of the jacket, but it’s currently on sale for £64.99 which I think is a fair price for what the Matilda delivers.

I really can’t fault the quality of the Trespass Matilda and it’s brilliant to be able to wear a jacket that doesn’t lead to me over heating, but is still super effective at protecting me from the elements.
