On their website, Firepot promise simple, nutritious dehydrated meals made with real ingredients and no preservatives, so we couldn’t wait to give them a try. We went camping over Easter for a couple of nights and didn’t want to take too much with us, so we decided that our trip would give us the perfect chance to give them a try.

Alistair went for the Orzo Pasta Bolognese which comes in at 700 calories and I chose the Porcini Mushroom Risotto at 540 calories.

Preparing the meals is super easy. You can cook them on a hob or open fire, but we chose the easier option of simply pouring boiling water straight into the foil lined pouch.

The packet has numbers on the back which you use as a fill guide, the amount of water you pour in depends on the meal you’re preparing. With boiling water poured inside, you then close the packet back up and leave it to sit for 10 minutes while the food inside re-hydrates.

The verdict

We both thought our meals were delicious! The portions are very generous, making them the ideal option to fuel you through a day of hiking or any outdoor activity. We didn’t do any serious walking during our weekend away however as my ankle is still healing, and I couldn’t manage to finish mine. I’ve got a pretty healthy appetite and normally have no problem polishing a meal off, so I was seriously impressed. Meanwhile, Alistair finished his and reported being nicely full.

Priced at £6.50 each the meals aren’t cheap, but you are paying for quality ingredients and genuinely tasty food. With a wild camp planned for later this year, we’ll definitely be taking a few of these with us.
