What did we think?

Having never been to Norfolk before and loving this time of year, I was particularly excited about our visit to Round the Woods. After leaving work early on the Friday we set off for Norfolk. 4 hours later, we pulled up at Round the Woods, ahead of schedule and were given a warm and friendly welcome by Kate, Seb and their adorable boys.

We were accompanied to our yurt, twinkling with fairy lights, and Seb bought us a basket of breakfast goodies while Kate told us more about the site, facilities and Hazelnut, our yurt for the weekend.

Inside the yurt at Round the Woods
We quickly set about the important task of settling in, and once Inside, the 6 metre yurt felt enormous! As well as the double bed and two single futons there was a table and 4 chairs, along with an extremely well equipped kitchen. As we arrived late, it was nice to have somewhere inside the yurt to cook, and the little kitchen included a double gas stove and everything we needed to cook our meals. From essentials like plates and cutlery, through to little thoughtful extras like salt and pepper, tea, sugar and Rapeseed oil.

The woodburning stove was incredibly effective at heating up the yurt. Although the weather was good as it was only early autumn, it was still chilly at night, so the woodburner got plenty of use.

The big surprise for us was that the top part of the woodburner was an oven, so after a day out exploring, we returned back to our yurt with food purchased at the local farmshop, and had baked potatoes for dinner – strangely decadent and all the more enjoyable for being under canvas!

The bed was so warm and comfortable that I really didn’t feel like I was under just a single layer of canvas, and didn’t feel cold at all. The big skylight was a joy to gaze up at, even on the final day with rain pelting down, watching leaves blowing and the raindrops falling down was unexpectedly relaxing.

Both of the yurts at Round the Woods have their own eco loo; essentially a little wooden hut with composting loo and hand washing sink, complete with quirky little pictures hanging on the walls to give it a homely touch.

As well as the eco loo, a short walk up the field takes you to an ingeniously renovated shipping container, disguised beneath beautiful wood cladding. Inside there are two large and very well appointed shower rooms, as well as a fridge-freezer and mobile phone charging facilities. We loved the honesty shop that was full of locally sourced goodies, from Norfolk made chocolate to ice cream and fruit juice. Back at home I’m kicking myself for not indluging in a bar of Gnaw chocolate!

Exploring the woodland

We loved the location of Round the Woods. As you might expect with a name like that, the yurts are located in a small field right next to woodland that you’re free to explore and enjoy.

Shell and AListair

We followed the trails through the woodland on a particularly warm and sunny day, and it was a pleasure to be able to roam freely in such beautiful surroundings. A short walk took us to a pretty pond where we stopped for a while to admire wildlife and enjoy the sunshine.

We continued on and passed bee hives and stopped to watch the resident geese and chickens, before Mr CWS located the rope swing and I ambled back to the yurt to read a book in the hammock making the most of what was left of such an unexpectedly warm day.

Out and about in the local area

For those looking to explore the area more fully, there are heaps of nature books and leaflets provided in the communal area, full of information about things to see and do out and about.  Owners Kate and Seb were hugely helpful in terms of recommending local places for us to visit and we took their recommendation to visit The Fox at Lyng and enjoyed a delicious meal there with the friendliest locals I’ve ever encountered!

As well as wandering around Lyng and the surrounding woodland, we spent an enjoyable morning pootling around Taverham Craft and Country Shopping Centre, and the following day we stopped off at Elveden Courtyard to shop for local produce and have lunch before setting off home.

Kate and Seb pride themselves on providing a warm welcome and they did exactly that. We had a wonderful time glamping at Round the Woods and we wouldn’t hesitate to highly recommend it.
