TRAVEL | Destination Dublin For the Perfect Weekend Break

Camping Blog Camping with Style | Travel, Outdoors & Glamping Blog

When it comes to choosing a destination for a weekend away, keeping a go-to list of potential destinations can be a real help. Each time I visit somewhere new, I assign the experience to a category, ranging from ‘let’s never speak/think of this place again’ to ‘let’s sell the house and live here’.

When I first visited Dublin, I immediately fell in love with it’s easy charm, and have since enjoyed subsequent stays there.

Reasons to love Dublin

  • It’s quite a compact city, which means you can get around easily, and don’t need to bother with taxis or public transport
  • You get to experience the craic, and it’s easier to find than you might imagine. Dubliners have an easy warmth about them that’s infectious
  • The Temple Bar area has a cool and lively vibe to it (though does get rowdy!)
  • The city is very pretty and photogenic
  • There’s an excellent choice of hotels to suit any budget; including the funky, budget pleasing Generator Hostel, the Clarance, (previously owned by U2), and the hip Trinity City Hotel. The first time I went, I stayed in the Hilton just over the bridge across the famous river Liffey, and had a truly stunning view
  • There are plenty of excellent restaurants to choose from. You’ll find a great selection of places to eat on Camden street
  • There’s heaps of stunning Georgian architecture to drool over and take arty Instagram shots

It’s impossible to talk about Dublin, and not mention the black stuff. If like me, you don’t drink it, a visit to the Guinness Storehouse is still well worth it. Seeing how it’s brewed alone is fascinating.

Trying to avoid the hordes of drunken stag and hen night revelers is relatively easy to do, just do a spot of research first and give the more mainstream bars a wide berth. I’ve done a lot of drinking in Dublin, from trendy cocktail bars to traditional pubs with live bands, and don’t get me wrong, drinking in the city is a lot of fun, but bars  are by no means all that Dublin has to offer.

Walking tours are numerous and a brilliant way of seeing the city and getting to know more about it. Hop on hop off bus tours are also a great way to see Dublin and I can highly recommend a ghost tour! Whilst I’m not the sort of person who finds shopping a particularly enjoyable thing to do, there are lots of cool and quirky shops in Dublin which are great to browse around.

The best advice I can give to anyone thinking about, or already planning to go to Dublin, is to put your walking shoes on and get out there! Exploring and wandering on-foot really is the best way to discover the city. From fabulous cafes to funky street art and stunning architecture, it makes a great destination for a weekend break.
